Camp Carefree
Since 1986, Camp Carefree has provided a free, one-week camping experience for youngsters from North Carolina and neighboring states. Children treated at North Carolina Children's Hospital for such things as cancer, sickle cell, multiple sclerosis and other life threatening diseases enjoy a week of playful fun with other children like themselves. The psychological, recreational and physical benefits of camping with their peers can help make their personal battle easier to bear.
Campers can fish, canoe, horseback ride, swim, hike, in addition to crafts and performing arts. Medical volunteers closely monitor the children and administer medications and treatments as necessary.
Located on 22 acres north of Reidsville, NC, inquiries and donations may be directed to:

Carolina PALS
The University of North Carolina offers students a chance to befriend a pediatric patient at North Carolina Children's Hospital through their organization; Carolina PALS (pediatric attention, love and support.) Once patients and students are matched up, they can attend the many activities sponsored by the organization throughout the year, or they can just "hang out" during outpatient chemotherapy and other procedures. In the past, the CPALS have hosted picnics, zoo trips, horseback riding and other fun-filled events free of charge to patients and their families.
Many of the students are drawn to the organization through some personal exposure to cancer or other disease, and their compassion for children is only enhanced by their ability to "be a kid" again while in the company of their pal. The parents benefit from their child's diversion by having more time to relate to other parents, or converse with hospital/clinic staff. Pediatric hematology/oncology patients can get more information from Nurse, Rose Dunaway in clinic ph.-966.2931, or the Hem/Onc office ph.-966.1178.
