2nd Annual Benefit Square Dance of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division
On Saturday, June 22, 2002, The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology held its 2nd Annual Benefit Square Dance. The venue was the Carrboro Center in Carrboro, NC, and the guest caller/cuers were Mr. Bill Terrell and Ms. Penny Lewis. Emcee for the event was Mr. Tony Chilton. Tarheel Angels Foundation sold snacks and drinks, as well as their signature T-shirts, hats, and other related momentos.

It was a wonderful location with the dancers enjoying themselves, while attendees such as Dr. Stuart Gold, Dr. Julie Blatt, Gwen Konsler and family, Rose Dunaway and spouse, enjoyed watching the squares, rounds and lines being performed. The admittance fee of $10.00 per person represented tax deductible contributions to the Peds. Hem/Onc. Trust Fund.

'A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
Many thanks to all who attended and supported "A Night To Remember, Celebrating 10 Years of VocalMotion". Everyone fortunate enough to attend enjoyed a wonderful evening of song and dance.

We want to extend very special thanks to Darylene Hecht and the members of Vocal Motion and AudioKudzu for choosing Tarheel Angels Foundation as the beneficiary of this years SAS shows. What an honor and pleasure it has been to receive such a generous contribution to help benefit children with cancer at North Carolina Children's Hospital.

Special thanks also to Sandy Steadman, a member of the talented VocalMotion choir. She is responsible for bringing Tarheel Angels Foundation to their attention and suggesting our efforts be chosen to support this year.

Formed in 1992, VocalMotion is the show choir of SAS. They are accompanied by AudioKudzu (the band that can't be stopped). Together they've become ambassadors to the community performing a versatile repertoire of song and dance for retirement centers, charity events and other community sponsored events.

Again, thank you to all of you who worked so hard to deliver such a wonderful show. VocalMotion and AudioKudzu are the talent that can't be stopped.

Street Fair
Tarheel Angel's Moms braved frigid temperatures and a cold wind in October at their booth at the Pittsboro Street Fair.

The Moms had a booth at the Street Fair in hopes of helping to raise the awareness of childhood cancers. They gave out gold ribbon pins, snack size candy bars and sold their t-shirts, sweatshirts and angel pins. They hope to make this an annual event.

"Angel Share" Program
During the Advent Season in December, the Young Adult Group of Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ in Pittsboro, North Carolina, sponsored their "Angel Share" Program.

Each Sunday during the month of December, each member of the church congregation was asked to bring a particular item that would be donated to Tarheel Angels Foundation. Those items were "sparkle" bandaids, toothbrushes and toothpaste for the kids and parents, travel size shampoo for the parents and coffee for parents while in the hospital and clinic.

We really appreciate Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ and especially the Young Adults for sponsoring this very special and important project.

Kids Helping Kids
Also during the month of December, two classes at Pittsboro Elementary School in Pittsboro, North Carolina, collected items for Tarheel Angels Foundation.

Instead of drawing names and bringing gifts for each other for Christmas, Mrs. Mitchell's and Mr. Marcin's classes brought in items to be given to Tarheel Angels Foundation for them to give to the children and their families at the North Carolina Children's Hospital. Some of the items the children brought in were puzzles, coloring books, crayons, books, games, stickers, stuffed animals and other toys along with toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, sparkle bandaids, coffee and cups. They even saved their snack money that day and donated it too!

A big thank you goes out to all the kids in Mrs. Mitchell's and Mr. Marcin's classes!

Christmas Decorations
Mothers from Tarheel Angels visited the 7th floor on Thursday, Dec. 6th. Armed with holiday decorations, they were able to transform the hospital halls into festive, colorful, kid-friendly walkways. A life size motion Santa was included in the display, and the nurses report that the children are tickled by his presence. Such a small but effective way to make a child's hospital stay around the holidays less painful. Thanks to those Moms!

East Chapel Hill High School Gymnasium, Weaver Dairy Road
Chapel Hill, North Carolina

The Division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is dedicated to giving care to children with all types of cancer and blood disorders. Over 50 new diagnoses of cancer are treated yearly. Contributions help support direct patient care issues as well as research to help cure more children with cancer.

Guest Bartender Night
Mack Moore and the Carolina Club hosted the Tarheel Angels Foundation to a "Guest Bartender Night" and silent auction.

While Mack adeptly mixed drinks, guests bid on the many items up for auction. We had a wide array of wonderful items, from handmade baby blankets and golf packages to a Clyde Jones 'critter'. The evening was further enhanced by Mrs. Deborah Haynes on the piano, and Etta Blankenship graced us with her beautiful voice.

We would like to thank Mack Moore for all his help in pulling this event together and for being our charming host. We also wish to thank the Carolina Club staff and those who graciously donated items for the auction. We thank them for helping to make this evening such a success.

St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day 2001 arrived with its usual splendid decor of green and thoughts of leprechauns and pots of gold. However for Tarheel Angels Foundation this day took on a whole new meaning. March 17th marked our first fundraising event.

Tarheel Angels Foundation held a skating event at Jellybeans Skate Center in Cary. Jellybeans generously donated all the door admission proceeds. We also sold T-shirts, Angel Pins, and raffle tickets for a chance to win a Sony Playstation donated by Wal-Mart.

We were able to raise money to help our kids and everyone had great fun. We want to thank Kim Rose, Bill Farley and Jellybeans for hosting this event for us. Thank you to Wal-Mart for their generous donation. And also, very special thanks to Mrs. Barbara Blitchington for pitching in and becoming our wonderful sales representative.
